Maya was born on June 11, 1989 in Jefferson City, Missouri. She got her first experience at playing basketball when she was three, because her mother mounted a basketball hoop on the back of their apartment door. Maya grew up with just her mother and they shared a great relationship.  When Maya was a junior in high school in the year of 2005-06 she was named Naismith Prep Player of the Year after leading Collins Hill High School to the Georgia's Class 5A state championship.  When Maya was attending Collins Hill High School, she was voted team leader in points and rebounds in the year of 2007. Her first college she ever attended was the University of Connecticut.
