Maya grew up with just her mother.  Maya's mom's name is Kathryn Moore.  Maya's whole name is Maya April Moore.  When Maya was three, her mother hung a basketball hoop on the back of their apartment door.  Maya and her mother have a close relationship that can never be broken.
